trouble building libg++-2.3 on ISC 3.2.2.1

using "gcc 2.3.2" on a generic 486 with 16 Mbytes RAM,
configured as "i486-isc".
got the error message "Memory fault - core dumped", from "make" presumably.
seemed to happen after "libiberty.a" was successfully built but before
anything else could be built.
put @echo "starting ..." and @echo "done" before and after each sub-target
of "all.normal" (eg. all-m4, all-gcc, ...) to try to see where make was
dying, found that the last one was "all-newlib".
changing directories to "libibery", "etc", "include", and running make there
does not cause a core dump, only if i run make from the directory above
"libiberty".
