Problems encountered building/installing make-3.63 on DGUX 5.4.2

1) job.c failed to compile:

gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DLIBDIR=\"/usr/gnu/lib\" -DINCLUDEDIR=\"/usr/gnu/include\" -c -I. -I. -I./glob \
      -g job.c -o job.o
job.c: In function `reap_children':
job.c:244: warning: passing arg 2 of `waitpid' from incompatible pointer type
job.c:247: warning: passing arg 1 of `wait' from incompatible pointer type
job.c:263: invalid operands to binary &
job.c:264: invalid operands to binary &
job.c:264: invalid operands to binary &
job.c:264: invalid ovalid operands to binary &
make: *** [job.o] Error 1

Chasing this down, it appears that the DGUX header file
(<sys/wait.h>) has macro definitions which conflict with those
in `job.c'. The following diffs indicate what I did to get the
package built:

diff job.c.orig job.c
263,265c263,265
< 	      exit_code = WEXITSTATUS (status);
< 	      exit_sig = WIFSIGNALED (status) ? WTERMSIG (status) : 0;
< 	      coredump = WCOREDUMP (status);
---
> 	      exit_code = WEXITSTATUS (pid);
>             exit_sig = WIFSIGNALED (pid) ? WTERMSIG (pid) : 0;
> 	      coredump = WCOREDUMP (pid);

While this succeeded in getting "make" built, it subsequently failed
miserably:

cd /usr/gnu/src/make-3.63/
make make.info
makeinfo ./make.texinfo
Making info file `make.info' from `./make.texinfo'.
make: *** [make.info] UNKNOWN SIGNAL (# 28) (core dumped)
make: *** Deleting file `make.info'
