I'm using gawk 2.01beta 13 Dec 1988.
The following command incorrectly produces no output:
ls | gawk ' { while (getline > 0) print $0 } '
However, this line does work (it produces a listing of the directory):
ls | gawk ' { while ((getline) > 0) print $0 } '

You should switch to gawk 2.10beta; the problem described in the referenced note is fixed in 2.10.
