GAS on Sequent Balance

Has anyone gotten GAS to work on a Sequent Balance running dynix
3.0.4? I've built it, but everything built with it core dumps. I
tried use ranlib on some files that were built using GAS and I got the
error message, old NS32000 format .o file.
Any hints?
