gnu tar "can't close /dev/rct0(3,-1)" on SCO machines

I am getting the above ("can't close /dev/rct0(3,-1)") error on some (maybe
all) of the machines I run gnutar on. I'm not sure why. I traced the error
down to the fact that rmtclose (#defined to close) returns -1 when called.

I know this question basically asks why close(3) returns -1 when trying to
close the tape drive on a SCO machine and therefore belongs in an SCO group
as well so that's why it is crossposted.

Any help appreciated.
