If configure.in uses AC_PREFIX(gcc) and the user specifies an explicit
prefix using the -prefix option, then configure will say that it's

  checking for gcc to derive installation directory prefix

even though it's not.

Here's a fix:

  dnl Example: if the argument is `gcc' and we find /usr/local/gnu/bin/gcc,
  dnl set `prefix' to /usr/local/gnu.
  define(AC_PREFIX,
! [echo checking for $1 to derive installation directory prefix
! if test -z "$prefix"
  then
    saveifs="$IFS"; IFS="$IFS:"
    for dir in $PATH; do
      test -z "$dir" && dir=.
