Rene: I have been trying to use GNU m4 v1.0 as a preprocessor for (arg!) FORTRAN with a large number of conditional compilations sections. The arguments to the "ifelse" statements can be quite long. In the following example m4 dies and dumps core. It appears I have overflowed an internal buffer since if I remove a single character from the body of the statement it works fine. After scanning the documentation and source code, however, It apprears there are no fixed buffers and that the OBSTACK was designed to work with strings of any length. In fact, the documantation in obstack.h reads: "One motivation for this package is the problem of growing char strings in symbol tables. Unless you are "fascist pig with a read-only mind" [Gosper's immortal quote from HAKMEM item 154, out of context] you would not like to put any arbitrary upper limit on the length of your symbols." (I really like that quote!) This problem is not a big concern since I have found a work-around but I thought you might want to investigate it.
