This reports GNU shellutils 1.8 installation, using GNU C 1.41 under COFF encapsulation, on this 386/ix 2.0.2 system, waiting for Hurd :-). Everything went fine. Let me suggest that, when installing as root, no diagnostic be emitted about su. However, when installing not being root, the diagnostics are not visible enough. Here is a patch: --- 1.1 1992/11/01 20:53:04 +++ shellutils-1.8/man/Makefile.in 1992/11/01 21:00:09 @@ -40,9 +40,10 @@ $(INSTALL_DATA) $$f $(mandir)/$(manprefix)`basename $$f 1`$(manext); \ done @if test `../src/id -u` = 0; then \ - echo you are root, so installing su.1; \ $(INSTALL_DATA) $(srcdir)/su.1 $(mandir)/$(manprefix)su.$(manext); \ - else echo you are not root, so not installing su.1; fi + else echo; \ + echo WARNING: you are not root, so not installing su.1; \ + echo; fi uninstall: for f in $(MANFILES) su.1; do \ --- 1.1 1992/11/01 20:50:44 +++ shellutils-1.8/src/Makefile.in 1992/11/01 20:59:01 @@ -39,11 +39,12 @@ for f in $(PROGS); do $(INSTALL_PROGRAM) $$f $(bindir)/$(binprefix)$$f; done rm -f $(bindir)/'['; ln $(bindir)/$(binprefix)test $(bindir)/'[' @if test `./id -u` = 0; then \ - echo you are root, so installing su; \ $(INSTALL_PROGRAM) su $(bindir)/$(binprefix)su; \ chown root $(bindir)/$(binprefix)su; \ chmod 4755 $(bindir)/$(binprefix)su; \ - else echo you are not root, so not installing su; fi + else echo; \ + echo WARNING: you are not root, so not installing su; \ + echo; fi uninstall: for f in $(PROGS) su; do rm -f $(bindir)/$(binprefix)$$f; done -- Franc,ois Pinard ``Vivement GNU!'' pinard@iro.umontreal.ca (514) 588-4656 ...!uunet!iros1!pinard About the League for Programming Freedom?
