comps/complaints/problems with GNU finger v1.36

finger version:	1.36
hardware:	sun4m (server), sun4c (36 clients)
OS: SunOS 4.1.2 (all)
C compiler:	gcc -O2 (version 2.2.2) (all)

I need to be able to run both Sun's stock finger program and
GNU finger together.

	First, I #defined BASENAME_IS_SERVICE in config.h.

Secondly, I installed the four executables as follows:

/usr/local/etc/gfingerd
/usr/local/etc/in.cgfingerd
/usr/local/etc/in.gfingerd
/usr/local/bin/gfinger

Third, I applied these changes to /etc/services on the finger
server and all finger clients:

finger 79/tcp
gfinger 179/tcp # GNU finger port
cgfinger	2003/tcp # GNU finger relay info

Fourth, I applied these changes to /etc/inetd.conf on the
finger server and all finger clients, and HUP'ed all inetd's:

finger stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/etc/in.fingerd in.fingerd
gfinger stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/local/etc/in.gfingerd in.gfingerd
cgfinger stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/local/etc/in.cgfingerd in.cgfingerd

	Results:

On the finger server, it works fine. On any of the clients,
however, it forwards to the server correctly, but using the finger
service, not the gfinger service. So, without any arguments, a
gfinger on a client shows me /usr/ucb/finger on the server.

	Second problem:

User Real Name What Idle TTY Host Console Location
qralston James R Crawford *p6 phantom. (:0.0)
qralston James R Crawford *co phantom. console

Nothing ever shows up in the "What" field.

	Third problem:

The special user names .version, .local, .clients, and .free
are only recognized as special if the -s option is used.

	First aesthetics complaint:

We have rather long machine names. Having the "Host" field
truncated so short is aesthetically ugly, IMHO, and can also make it
very hard to mentally associate what machine is actually being
referred to.

How about letting the installer specify what fields he wants
to show up in the global listing? Personally, I'd want to eliminate
the "Real Name" field and use the extra space for the "Host" field.

	Second aesthetics complain:

How about making a USE_SHORTNAME #define. If defined, finger
hosts (either server or client) are referred to by their first names
only, not their fully-qualified names.

	Why? Because:

Free hosts are firmin.cislabs.pitt.edu, andre.cislabs.pitt.edu,
reyer.cislabs.pitt.edu, meg.cislabs.pitt.edu, giry.cislabs.pitt.edu,
javert.cislabs.pitt.edu, fantine.cislabs.pitt.edu, marius.cislabs.pitt.edu,
cosette.cislabs.pitt.edu, thenardier.cislabs.pitt.edu,
gavroche.cislabs.pitt.edu, brujon.cislabs.pitt.edu,
claquesous.cislabs.pitt.edu, fauchelevent.cislabs.pitt.edu,
feuilly.cislabs.pitt.edu, courfeyrac.cislabs.pitt.edu,
enjolras.cislabs.pitt.edu, joly.cislabs.pitt.edu, grantaire.cislabs.pitt.edu, and
prouvaire.cislabs.pitt.edu.

...is really redundant. (Also, it didn't take into account
the four characters added by the "and ", and therefore put >80 chars
on the next-to-last line.)

It's not my intent to sound negative; I feel that even just
getting /usr/local/bin/gfinger to forward using the gfinger service
will make this a truly useful program. Thanks to everyone that has
helped writing, or in writing, it.

	Regards,

James
