SunOS 4.1.1
compiled with gcc, I think, but I'm not sure.

What happened:

I was applying the patches to gcc-2.2.2 to bring it up to 2.3.1,

when

I got a whole boat-load of crud in the wrong directory.

What I did:

for me, I went to /optical/gnu

and did a simple patch < ~/src/gcc-2.2.2-2.3.1.diff

because gcc-2.2.2 was a dir right there.

Everything went well, I believe, until it wanted to create new files
under gcc-2.2.2/config. I do *not* have a gcc-2.3.1 dir yet. The
new files went into . instead, very ugly. Interestingly, for every
file that got created in ., a bunch of zero length .orig files were
also created.

Prove it to yourselves. I *think* this is what happened. It seems to
work OK if I cd gcc-2.2.2 and do a patch -p1 < patchfile.

Am I off my rocker? did I do something wrong?
