Multivolume Gnu tar bogosity .. Heeeeeelp !!

Gnu tar has a real problem when it
1) creates a multivolume archive on 3 1/2" floppies on an Ultrix
workstation, and then
2) reads this archive on a Sun.
When reading,
tar xvMf /dev/fd0c
reads the first floppy *perfectly*. Then, as expected, I get the prompt
Prepare volume #2 and hit return
But when I pop the second floppy in, I *always* get the error
tar: this volume is out of sequence
This happens even with two-volume archives, where the floppy disk cases
are different *colors*, so as to make the order *completely* unambiguous.
Can someone tell me what is going on ? Please ?!?
