*fatal* bug in gas-1.38.1
#747

Software: gcc-2.2.2 / gas-1.38.1
Hardware: Sequent Symmetry (DYNIX 3.0.12) (i386-sequent-bsd)

gcc-2.x is generating ".align 2" assembler statements apparently
before an assembler label in the text segment. gas-1.38.1 is losing
by incorrectly emitting 0x00s for these statements instead of "nop"s!

The fatal result is that the resulting executable generated with these
tools will segfault on one of these incorrect instructions.

Someone has to have seen this before, who has a quick patch for gas?
