#810

This report applies to GNU tar 1.11, installed with GNU C 1.40 under
COFF encapsulation on a 386/ix 2.0.2 system (waiting for Hurd to be
ready :-).

It seems that "tar cv..." tries to print NULL's. Knowing that

	printf ("%s", NULL);

produces the recognizable L^A^C pattern on this machine, here are some
examples (in which I edited C-a into ^A and C-c into ^C):

$ tar cfvV /dev/null "GNU tar 1.11"
L\001\003
tar: can't add file L^A^C : No such file or directory
$ tar cvf /dev/null tar.tar.Z
L\001\003
$ tar cvf /dev/null .
