Howdy:

I had some trouble building bison-1.19 on an HP 9000/834 running HP-UX
7.00:

gcc -O -c -g -DXPFILE=\"/usr/local/gnu/bison-1.19/lib/bison.simple\" -DXPFILE1=\"/usr/local/gnu/bison-1.19/lib/bison.hairy\" ./files.c -o files.o
In file included from ./files.c:33:
./system.h:12: strings.h: No such file or directory
make: *** [files.o] Error 1
======================================================================

The problem seems to be that "$(DEFS)" was left out of the rule for
files.o:

======================================================================
files.o: files.c
	$(CC) -c $(CFLAGS) $(PFILES) $(srcdir)/files.c $(OUTPUT_OPTION)
======================================================================

instead of, say:

======================================================================
.c.o:
	$(CC) -c $(CFLAGS) $(CPPFLAGS) $(DEFS) -I$(srcdir)/../include $<
======================================================================

Adding "$(DEFS)" to the files.o rule fixed the problem (system.h,
included by files.c, needed to know that it was being read by a USG
system).
