PLACE 3400 Boelter Hall Cookies & Coffee Will Be Served Starting at 4:00 PM TOWARDS A MODELING AND DATABASE SYSTEM FOR LARGE-SCALE EARTH SCIENCE APPLICATIONS. Terence R. Smith, Professor of Geography and Computer Science, University of California at Santa Barbara. ABSTRACT The talk describes progress that is being made towards the design and possible implementation of a modeling and database system (MDBS) that is being designed jointly with earth scientists to support scientific modeling in data-intensive and numerically-intensive investigations. One may characterizes scientific modeling as the iterative definition of an appropriate set of named domains of elements viewed in terms of representation, value constraints, applicable transformations, and interrelationships, together with sequences of applicable transformations of domain elements. Our MDBS is designed to support a high-level, declarative modeling and database language (MDBL) in which scientists may easily specify complex domains of spatio-temporal elements and associated transformations. We exemplify applications of MDBS with representations in MDBL of modeling problems involving Amazon hydrology.
