But what, in practical terms, does this offer? Say, after all the apologetics and criticism, that we have probable truth and intellectual appeal on our side. Isn't this, in psychological terms, rather thin? How can it compete against a religion which promises forgiveness to the guilt-ridden, a cosmic home and purpose to those whose mundane lives are in crisis, and offers hope that no failure is truly final this side of the grave?
