Apologizing to the CHinese

Apparently Steven Harper agreed to apologize to the Chinese for something
that happened 120 years ago. How Canadian. Someone runs us over with their
car and we apologize for denting their bumper.

It's amusing to see people today criticize the leaders of the past for their
decisions, as though we can say their decisions were wrong even though the
times were far different. Our leaders at the time knew China was a huge
place, Canada had a small population, and to allow unrestrained immigration
from China would soon overwhelm Canadians. Imagine how many would have come
if there was no head tax. We would be China II right now. Instead of the
Western way flourishing here, the Eastern philosophy would flourish and
Canada would be a far different place today.

Let me tell you something bluntly: Those Chinese who paid the head tax were
lucky to come here. If a stranger asks to stay at your house and you say,
"Okay, but you have to pay me $50 per day." you are *not* a bad person. You
don't have to apologize for asking for compensation. It is your home and you
are entitled to make whatever offer you want. Canada owes no apology to
anyone they have allowed into the country. Apparently 81,000 came here and
paid the tax. Enough said.

So dipshit Harper gives single mothers 4 cents a year for child care, and
wants to pay how much to the Chinese?

Actually is not really 'Canadian' as much as i dont like harper its
something most governments do. Wait till there is not many 'victims
left' and pay a minimal amount (vs billions much more recently to such
crimes' Its more tokenism then anything in terms of taking
responsibility for such government behavior.
The head tax as i see is not much of an issue for me personally, maybe
it could have been conducted better but the main concept being to help
stem the tide of immigration is something all countries do.
No nation will warmly welcome a massive large influx of people who are
different. Doing so would change language , culture, customs and
eventually laws.

He's just trying to make himself look good, by doing something too
many years too late. Politicians seem to think that gestures of good
will, at any time for any amount, will increase their popularity.

    Good luck, "Steve".

It's called sarcasm, look into it.

I heard that Harper wants to give $20000 per head for those who paid the
tax. In contrast, he gives single parents $1200 a year for child care,
which is obviously not adequate.

Lol.

Apparently someone hasn't been to Richmond BC in a while. I have nothing
against the Chinese of course, but they are a majority now in some parts of
Canada.

This is as silly as Clinton going to Africa and apologizing for
slavery. I doubt it gets Harper any votes in the next election. If
Chinese see the Conservatives as racist rednecks, this is not going to
change their minds.

most "ethnics" will vote conservative as that party represents their
upbringing more than the lefties. Majority gov't on its way

Sure, and when it comes to Conservatives, even that isn't enough.

I think Chinese vote conservative more than Liberal. They've seen both the
leftist Socialist system (mainland China) compared side by side with free
markets (Hong Kong) and they judge accordingly. Harper didn't have to do
this and I agree, it won't get him any more votes.

Canada was as much a home to the social trash junked out of England or
Europe as it was to any other ethnic group. At least those who had not
been convicts at home made better founders than those who had.

And THEeeeen...we can get all the Chinese gangs of our larger cities to
apologize for importing so much MORE wonderful crime and those awesome
drugs. Anyone remember the incident a few years ago in Moncton where one
chap had his achilles (sp?) tendon cut so he could not run away?

Well everyone, as we all know the 'true' Canadian identity is LONG gone.
Those in power put E V E R Y T H I N G ahead of the beaver, Maple Leaf,
Mountie hats...the works and almost SHAME everyone else who doesn't. I LOVE
the cultural identities but once here, we...and I DO say WE...ARE CANADIANS
FIRST...or so we were lead to believe for so long. PUT THE FLAG IN THE
CLASSROOMS...BRING BACK THE BIBLE...I WOULD LIKE TO SEE NON-CHRISTIAN
PASSAGES INTRODUCED TOO for the benefit of non-Christian kids in that
particular classroom.

Interesting...seeing the MultiCulturalism at Alderney Landing and at work at
a certain bldg on Highfield Park Drive...IT'S ALL THERE...except
Anglo-Saxon...hmmm...let's see NEW SCOTLAND. NADA...NOTHING...for pete
sake...we don't promote ourSELVES while endorsing others. Methinks we're
now scared to speak out for fear of being tagged with the R word.

So...apologize...perhaps. Acknowledge it was wrong...yes. Expect anything
similar in return...not too damn likely.

***The largest drug smuggling operation in BC is operated by Hell's
Angel and these are not Chinese.
*** The consumers of the drugs so imported are mostly non-Chinese.
With the market demand created by the non-Chinese consumers, how could
any import be stopped?
***The people that made Hong Kong a British colony through opium
smuggling were not Chinese.

Go take a few courses from Affirmative Action classes.

Why bother reasoning with those self-labelled white trash?

My advice to the Chinese -- in China and anywhere else -- is keep up with
your hard-working habit and become richer and richer.

The world is run by money, and Chinese are going in the right direction.

We make money; let them complain.

responsibility to support them; and if children all grow up to be like the
retard trolls in this newsgroup, it's best their mothers drown them like
Yates did.

I suppose it's best if I actually respond to this rather then post nothing.
(Sorry about that by the way).

unacceptable here. Go pound sand.

Oh, and in case you are wondering if I am one of these people you're
speaking of, you would be incorrect.
