Recomendations for Computer Parts Retailer

Hi all-

I am in the process of tracking down a retailer for a Tyan Tomcat
motherboard. I have checked at the larger local stores (i.e. Computer
City and Micro Center) and was wondering if anyone had any other
companies that might have this motherboard in the NoVa/DC/southern
Maryland areas (most preferably the Rockville/Germantown/Gaithersburg
areas).

Thanks,

Megan

Try Skytek in Northern Virginia, over by Tysons. They've got really
prices, and a pretty decent selection of boards, add-ons, etc.

Skytek has some of the best prices I've seen in the area, and they
carry Tyan.

Call first to find out about their walk-in customer purchasing
requirements. Back in April, they allowed walk-ins only specified
days a week, and at only certain times during the day. I think, but
I'm not sure, it was Mondays to Thursdays only, from 1:00PM to 7:00
PM.

You had to bring cash or a ceritified bank check. This means no
plastic and no personal checks.

Limited or non-existant store guarantee policy, too. It may have been
7 days, exchange only, no refunds.

No, No, don't go there. I have heard horror stories about them. They
have really strange hours, 4pm to 7pm weekdays, no weekend hours or
something like that. They don't take credit cards or checks, cash
only, and they have no return policy, once you walk out of the store
you're stuck with it. Again this is from what I have heard and from
my one visit to their store several months ago.

Try calling some of the places listed in Monday's Business section.
Places I would cal are K-Tek Computers 703-440-1140, (the best prices
I have seen on motherboards and CPU's,),
INTECH 703-912-4204, (where the best place for memory?, great
selection of motherboards),
G.E.D 703-550-9600 (one of their salesmen told me that they can get
hold of anything that I wanted, but of course that was the salesman
speaking),
Advanced Computer Networks 703-920-3551 (I a motherboard, case, and
CPU from them last year. That computer is but a memory now, (sold).

The ultimate source would be to do a Web search for Tyan and get a
list of authorized resellers. You might also try posting to
Misc.Forsale.Computers.Pc-Specific.Motherboards.

Don't go to the big stores, they are only good for their discounted
merchandize, or their special sales.

That's a good source - we build all of the Intel boxes we use from parts
we get from DSS. We've had very good luck with them, quality-wise, and
their prices seem competitive.
