Hi, there,
Thanks for all who responded to my question regarding an Accura 288 V.FC+FAX
modem. According to the findings, I should be able to use the modem with
factory default setting (or plus minor changes). I returned the Accura modem
to the dealer and they agree that there may be hardware problem with the modem.
Thanks again.

Original posting:
I've got a Hayes ACCURA 288 V.34/V.FC+FAX (however, the name on the manual
is "ACCURA 288 V.FC+FAX").
I can't use it to connect to almost all BBS. I did the same testing with
a Supra FAX modem v.32bis to test the hardware used (e.g. the modem cable,
the software, the PC, etc.) but everything works fine.
I tested with factory default setting and different (reasonable) combinations
of setting but the situation didn't improved.
Would anyone please help and advice ? Would be much appreciated if you
would also provide the "at&v" output of your modem.
Summary of response:

The following is my at&v of my Accura modem.
I see the follow-up article said that it should disable hardware handshaking.
I wonder as I use it with hardware handshaking enabled and no problem has been
got.
Please tell me as you finally know the answer.
Thanks!

Is it the problem only for BBS?
How about connecting to internet with Winsock ,
slip or PPP?
You may check you comm program e.g. Telix ,
Procomm...... 's setting.
Is it set to ANSI-BBS? check other settings in
the comm software.
It may be due to software.

Why? I use it with hardware handshaking and I haven't got any problem.

Well, I found out the problem was something very obscure (a partially bad
ISA slot on my motherboard) and it has been fixed. As for at&v, I'll get
it to you soon...
Ok...here is what I get with my Hayes Accura 28.8k with AT&V:

Stored profile 0 and 1 differ only in the ATXn command, which
reports or suppresses connect info. Make sure you have ATX4 and
ats95=47 to report relevant info. ATS36=4 instructs the modem to
drop the connection if no EC is established, so make sure yours
is set to ats36=7. This will allow a connect even if no EC is
established, which is better during a testing phase.
If you want to play with different modulations, use the at+ms=
command as follows:
at+ms=m,a,l,h
where m=modulation scheme, a=automode, l=lowest connect,
h=highest connect. Enter at+ms=? to get a list of valid values
and at+ms? to get the current settings. The modulation schemes
(m) are numbered as follows:
74=V.FC (14.4 to 28.8 [note: V.FC reverts to V.32bis below 14.4])
69 and 64: U.S. schemes for 300 and 1200bps
11=V.34 (300 to 28.8 [of course the preferred scheme])
10=V.32bis (up to 14.4)
9=V.32 (4800 and 9600)
3=V.23 (1200/75)
2=V.22bis (2400)
1=V.22 (1200)
0=V.21 (300)
The automode (a) is set to 0 or 1, with 1 being on and 0 off. It
enables rate negotiation using V.8 or V.32bis Annex. For
testing, try both. For final settings, automode should be set,
ie a=1.
The lowest connect rate (l) specifies, obviously, the lowest
connect rate allowed for a connection. If the negotiated rate is
lower than that specified, the modem will either hang while
emitting a high-pitched tone or hang-up. (h) specifies the
highest connect rate, which the modem will never exceed. You
could have a connect rate of 2400 and still be using V.34, so
highest connect rate does not affect the modulation scheme.
So, for example, to force a V.32bis connection for testing, enter
"at+ms=10,1,4800,14400" or "at+ms=10,0,4800,14400." To force a
V.FC connect, enter "at+ms=74,a,14400,28800" with (a) being 0 or
1. Determine what modems you are attempting to call,
specifically what chipsets/data pumps they use. Some combos
don't work well at V.34. You may end up using V.FC for some.
Also, the Hayes Accura does not report modulation correctly,
Hayes' claims to the contrary. Only V.FC will be reported
accurately. If you get a connect above 14.4k and see V.FC
indicated, you've got V.FC. If above 14.4k and no modulation
scheme is indicated, you've got V.34. Their handshaking signals
are different, so your ear should be able to tell you enough.

I use hardware handshaking and work with almost all BBS!! When I use
software handshaking only, some problems may be raised. Could you tell
more details how can't connect to BBS but succeed in Internet server?
