A few thoughts on the Indian portion... In article <13587@gazette.bcm.tmc.edu>, rchafetz@cephalo.neusc.bcm.tmc.edu (Ross S. Chafetz) writes: |> |> Usual disclaimer |> |> |> * Inexpensive ($6 or under per person) |> ** Moderate ($6 to $14) |> *** Expensive ($15 to $25) |> **** Very Expensive ($25 and up) |> |> Indian |> |> Anand Bhavan * (6662 SW Fwy at Hillcroft) What normal Indian people eat |> - authentic home cooking |> Rajah and Khoori Noor (sp) are much better, particularly the combination plates... Rajah is at Hillcroft and Harwin; Khoori Noor is on Bissonnet, across Westwood Mall... |> Bombay Grill ** (3640 Hillcroft) Good and very cozy;don't be misled |> by the exterior |> This was the latest of Mickey Kapoor's Indian restaurants which he has either owned or managed, It is now defunct, replaced by Akbar, which may also be defunct and is good. |> Bombay Palace ** (3901 Westheimer at Weslayan) Best Indian in town. |> Their all you can eat lunch buffet is vared and outstanding |> Three stars here... Agreed. The buffet is expensive, but better than any place in town by far...they have apparently had the same chefs and cooks for some time now... |> India's (5704 Richmond W of Chimmey Rock) Large selection of curries |> and tandoori. Don't make the mistake of saying to the waiter, The |> hotter the food, the better the tip. They seek to please! |> This rates ten stars (in terms of expense)! This restaurant has declined greatly in terms of service and food. It's too expensive. One of the maitre'd's also works at Bombay Palace and likes it much more there...however, speaking of heat, the Vindaloos are still some of the best in town... |> Natray ** (2047 Marshall at Alabama) As spicy as you like, with the |> airy atmosphere |> I believe that this heah has been defunct for a LONG time (three years or so) unless they reopened it VERY recently...the food was variable. Speaking of airy, the back door was always open when I went there, because I would come out of the bathroom and find myself in the parking lot... |> Shiva * (2514 Times Blvd. in Ric Village) Beautiful setting, more |> tuned to western tastes as Indian cuisine goes. |> Probably more like two to three stars here... Western, as in British. Same family had Natraj (look at the backs of the chairs). I've been very unimpressed with everything here except the setting, which really is beautiful... |> Taj Mahal ** (8328 Gulf Fwy (I-45 S) at Bellfort) Sitar Music and |> food are authentic, with a good reputation in the Indian population |> here. |> One to two stars here, I think... I don't know what authentic means in this case, but the vegetarian dishes have been quite good. I've seen lots of Indians here, too. You can't beat it money-wise... Another entry: Tandoor Palace *** (SW Freeway at Hillcroft) This place is finally getting its bearings. Still too expensive, but the food has been quite good lately. Nice decor. I've heard that it might fold, though. If not, it could rival Bombay Palace before long if it continues to improve... |> |> |> Ross Chafetz -- Josh Abrams Baylor College of Medicine IAIMS Development Internet (wabrams@bcm.tmc.edu)
