Does anybody else read this group?

What recommendations would others make about nice, romantic restaurants
in Houston? I think of only the Black Lab and the Red Lion, on Montrose
and on Main respectively. Didn't the latter one have a fire? What ones
have others found?

Try Baba Yaga's (don't trust my spelling) just off of westheimer and
montrose. I don't have the exact address, but they're in athe phone book.

I would have recommended Jack O'Neill's that used to be on I10 W (now is
an IHOP - that's okay, too) but they went out of business, apparently. I
liked it a lot. Very quiet - w/fire, even.

Does anyone know what happened to it? Maybe it was TOO quiet. :-)

Some of the booth or wall seating in Thai Pepper (Alabama) makes for a
nice, romantic setting. Personally, I like Anthony's for romantic dining.
But that's probably not so much because of the surroundings as just general
ambiance.

The Red Lion did indeed have a fire but are back in business now.

Others I might suggest in the area are Bon Apetito (Italian) on Holcombe
between Greenbriar and the old Shamrock site, and Nit Noy (Thai) on
Bolsover between Morningside and Kelvin.

I reccommend a place called 'Bistro Vino' in the Montrose.
The exact address escapes me. Cost is about $20 per person
the last time I went, excluding wine. Very romantic,
good service...

I personally wouldn't recommend either of those if your idea of
romance includes any sort of strenuous activity after dinner. British
food makes me want to take a nap.
I like Mai Thai, which is perhaps better lit than many romantic
places, but the food is great and not too heavy. It's located next to
Two Pesos on Kirby north of 59. It's also inexpensive; the two of us
usually spend around $30 together, with appetizer and dessert,
ignoring drinks.
Damien's Cucina Italiana is more traditional, with lower lighting.
Two can even get out of there for less than $50 ignoring drinks.
That's where I proposed to Lisa (ok, I cheated and had a good idea
what the answer was in advance). It's on Smith street north of Spec's
warehouse (that's not as helpful as it should be, since Smith street
is one-way southbound).
For knock-dead cuisine, can't beat Brennan's. Hard to spend less
than $60 for two, at least if you're doing it right. There's a
pheasant dish with red wine and wild boar bacon sauce that's
tremendous, for around $25. I think it's on Smith street, right where
it hits 59. Coat required (they loaned me one when I went there
wearing a turtleneck!). Don't miss the free pralines on the way out!
