"The 58-year-old, unashamed liberal Democrat, flying to northern
Minnesota when his twin-engine plane went down in the very same bad
weather that was supposed to have claimed JFK Jr.'s aircraft, was
locked in a tight race for a third term with former St. Paul Mayor
Norm Coleman. Both Republicans and Democrats were riveted on that
race, as it could have determined control of the Senate, which the
Democrats now control by a single seat.

Attorney Andrew Parker, a Coleman supporter, says Wellstone sees a
moral equivalence between Palestinian terrorism and Israeli military
retaliation and that Wellstone has not been good for the Jewish
community. In addition, he believes Wellstone is on the wrong side of
the Iraq debate, Parker said."

Very convenient accidents. This time they made sure his wife was in
the plane, so that Coleman would not be defeated by a dead man.

I think the significance of Wellstone's death is grossly
underestimated. There is a perception that his contribution was not
significant -he was a voice in the wilderness. I disagree. I think his
voice was even more significant than President Bush's because at least
Wellstone was elected by the people.

Whether Wellstone was murdered or not, Wellstone was elected, and
those who considered him an enemy, are the potential suspects of a
suspicious death.

But don't expect a resolution when the Attorney General of the United
States is an extremist who cannot even win an election against a dead
man. Ironic, isn't it? The selection of George Bush's Senate is now as
significan as the selection of Attorney General, John Ashcroft. I
think we have underestimated the significance of politically motivated
murder for far too long. Solve this one, Mr. Attorney General:

Was the Eveleth Airstrip Sabotaged? According to NBC news and CNN
there was a set of radio-controlled runway lights at the Eveleth
airport that are activated by the pilot when he clicks his radio.

Since it costs only $500, almost anybody could buy one and put up
their own set of lights with a battery, a power inverter, some wire
and couple of spotlights. The final cost of all the equipment
necessary would probably be around $700 to $1000.

What if someone set up a fake set of lights in the swamp that turned
on when the pilot clicked his radio after sabotaging the real lights
at the unmanned airstrip? If that's the case, then the pilot would try
to land in the swamp thinking the fake lights were the airport.

The rain, sleet and fog at the time would have reduced visibility to
nearly zero near the ground and obscured the terrain. By the time the
pilot realized he was landing in a swamp, it would be too late to pull
up and plow right into the ground. Other reports indicated that
visibility was good on that particular day, so if that is in fact the
case, poor weather reports were meant to divert attention away from
the real cause of the crash.

The impact into the soft muck of the swamp would explain why the
fuselage was still intact and the wings and tail were torn
off(according to the eyewitness pilot who found the plane). The soft
muck pushing it's way up around the fuselage as the plane impacted on
it's belly would break off the wings and tail. It would also make it
look like an accident. Even the last person to see the plane go down
said he never saw any smoke, fire or anything as if to imply the plane
was landing normally.

Before investigators arrived, the fake lights and equipment were
removed to hide any evidence.

All this is possible, but it sounds like the area where they crashed
was full of muck. The odds of a light or truck getting stuck--or
footprints being left behind--would have been too great.

Another possibility is that someone tampered with the mechanicals. The
plane was flying in the wrong direction to land, suggesting some sore
of guidance malfunction.  Also, the witness reported seeing the plane
turning sharply towards the left, possibly as a result of a tampered
gauge.

The fake lights possibility reminds me of a plot from "Die Hard II"
where terrorists took over the guidance software at an airport and
made the pilot of a jumbo jet think the runway was 200 feet lower than
it really was during the middle of a blizzard. By the time the pilot
realized what was wrong, the jet smashed belly-first into the runway
and blew up.

Whatever the cause, it seems that Sen. Wellstone was murdered after
all.

Politically motivated crime is like the Mafia was in the 1950's. The
authorities will continue to refuse to recognize it, until somebody
like Robert Kennedy comes along, to restore justice.

Ironically, Robert F. Kennedy's nephew was recently prosecuted for a
murder that was committed by a lunatic named Ken Littleton:
