It's not an assertion, it's a fact. Mazda wanted to re-create the
classic British roadster, while eliminating the problems. They looked
at MGs, Triumphs, and Lotuses and decided to emulate the Lotus Elan
because it had the best combination of power and handling. Any book on
the development of the Miata talks about the Lotus Elan, and the
designers and engineers as well.
The cars that have *followed* the Miata (MX-5) are more in the vein
of what you describe - including my own Z4. The moderate success of
the Miata had everyone else scrambling (if you can apply that word to
the inexpicably long period it took) to release their own: Honda's
S2000, Pontiac's Solstice, BMW's Z3, even the Porsche Boxster.
