And you've inadvertently hit upon the problem with the US auto industry too. It is an MBA/actuary/anyone-but-engineer project designed to sell quantity over quality. Whether in pounds or units sold. A look at the current lard-butt Mustang or Corvette compared to a Miata illustrates the difference in perception of what a sports car should be, between what the same ad agencies that market fast food make it out to be (big powerful engine, 0-60 times compared to that of an Atlas rocket), and what it really about (Fahrvergnugen). And as a practical matter, lard-butted and fed with growth hormones trickling down from animal feed, big fat-assed people can hardly fit in a Miata (by the way, not an American car despite Ford's control of Mazda), and need the Suburbans, the Excursions, and other lane hoggers. Other than sumo-wrestling, it is hard to find a sport overseas where being 300+ lb is a qualification. Yes sir, lb/$ is what America is good at!
