Howdy, You know, some of these old GVC modems ARE a little dodgy... I'm trying out someone's GVC modem. It connects to iconz.co.nz fine through shell and allows you to use their system. Except for the 'finger' command: This has nothing to do with iconz's set-up, but typing 'finger' at the prompt lists the users online, then the carrier signal is dropped. Go figure. It even connects with PPP, however, that's ALL it does. Just connects. Running a GUI app like Eudora or Fetch results in no data being sent or received: nothing. The programs don't hang, just... nothing happens. In Eudora, the ol' "CANNOT RESOLVE DOMAIN NAME SERVER ERROR 39:57" pops up. I've tried everything. It's not an extension conflict. I need some expert advice here. And yes, this post is being mailed to GV's support team as well, but I'm a little pressed for time... I think it's because this particular modem doesn't support CTS/DTR hardware flow control, assuming that this NOT needed for shell but essential for PPP access. (And I've tried all the MacPPP settings for flow control. Argh.) Can this be solved with a modem string alteration? It'll need to be a sophisticated one, I've tried diddling with the basic AT set. Can it be solved with a new cable? Any solutions gratefully received! -dave. PS: It's a GVC FM-144VBIS, serial #JN-9009, uses an RS-232C cable. System 7.1 % 7.5 used, and my fave fruit is nectarines. -- Dave Horn ComedyFest Ltd daveh@iconz.o.nz

It's probably not related to the modem ---- check if you have set the
"nameserver" option correctly.
