DOCTORATE POSITION IN ROBOT CONTROL/DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS MODELING

A PhD position is available at the German National Research
Center for Information Technology (GMD), Institute for
Applied Information Technology, section Artificial
Intelligence, research group "Cognitive Robotics".

GMD is jointly owned by the Federal Republic of Germany and
the federal states Hessia and Northrhine-Westfalia. The
main site is in Sankt Augustin near Bonn. Further sites are
in Darmstadt and Berlin; a dependency is located at
Tokyo. GMD has approximately 1200 employees and an annual
funding of 170 mio. DM (cf. http://www.gmd.de/ )

The research group on cognitive robotics homes several
research projects concerning autonomous mobile robotics,
covering the range from basic sensorimotor control to
vision, spatial representation and learning. A common focus
is the development of robots for sewage systems inspection.

The PhD project concerns the design of "behavior-based"
control architectures, using dynamical systems oriented
mathematical models. The flavor of this kind of research
can be experienced, e.g., in the papers
jaeger-identify.ps.gz and jaeger-christaller-dd.ps.gz,
which can be obtained per anonymous ftp at
ftp.gmd.de/ai-research/Publications/Robotik/.

The 18 hrs/week position is paid according to the "Tarif
deutscher Laender (TDL)", which currently amounts to 1940
DM monthly. The position is vacant from May 1, 1996, and
will be granted initially for one year, with two further
years possible in mutual agreement.

Desired qualification: university degree in computer
science/ mathematics/physics/biology/biocybernetics or a
similar discipline; familiarity with control theory or
differential geometry or dynamical systems theory; interest
in the formal modeling of very complex systems with many
time scales, basic programming experience.

GMD is an equal opportunity employer.
