The following article is to be be published in IEEE's "The Institute" next month. It was delayed getting to press - hence this posting. ================================================= Austraila's Telerobot - coming to a virtual museum near you ! The World's first first 6 axis Telerobot began life in 1994 as an experimental web based research tool for investigating the potential of telerobotics and studying operator behaviour at the Perth based University of Western Australia. (UWA is also the home of the World's first sheep shearing robot). Telerobot was invented by UWA researcher Ken Taylor in 1994 when the only other live device on the internet was a coffee pot at Cambridge University. Since then, UWA's Telerobot has been in use most of the time, the main complaint being that there is only one Telerobot ! All this will change in early 1997 when a second Telerobot will become available to meet the demand from 'net surfers' around the World. Located at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, the Telerobot will provide faster access to American operators who now account for up to 65% of Telerobot users. Available 24 hours a day, visitors from 'cyberspace' can use the Telerobot to build primitive block structures and see their results almost immediately. Users can then physically visit the museum and watch or operate live the Telerobot they had been operating from home. In October, the Telerobot took out a Japan Robotics Association (JARA) award - recognition of its significant contribution to advancement in robotics research.
