Newsgroups: alt.consciousness,alt.bbs,alt.alien.visitors Date: Tue, 13 Dec 94 18:50:57 PDT From: jmurphy@onramp.net Subject: The Real Crop Circles X-Newsreader: NEWTNews & Chameleon -- TCP/IP for MS Windows from NetManage MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII The crop circles of southwestern England which have progressed from circular impressions of flattened but undamaged grain to genuine works of art with designs so neat and sharp have, in spite of the debunking attempts of Doug and Dave, drawn thousands of visitors to this part of England each year. Hundredss more area citizens sit together with the visitors from all over the world each evening expectantly watching over the fields until the wee hours of early morning. Interest in the phenomenon is reaching new heights that, ironically, was created in part by the international media furor in September, 1991, over the claims of these two elderly Englishmen, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, that they had hoaxed at least 300 circles in England by stomping the grain themselves at night. Their story was suspect from the beginning and some circle authorities think the Doug and Dave affair was a deliberate disinformation campaign by someone wanting to keep the public unaware and uninterested in the phenomenon. Countries, other than England, are experiencing similar formations, and the Doug and Dave hoaxing event has led those of us who are circles fans as well as researchers to look at the following guidelines when declaring a circle as real or hoaxed. The following criteria is used in making this determination: 1. Reports of dogs howling and barking the night of the formation in the near vicinity of the new formation 2. Animals refusing to enter or fly over the fresh formation. 3. Accounts of headaches and dizziness when entering the circles 4. Reports of strange lights - even UFOs - in the area 5. Tingling sensation in the legs and hands, particularly in women 6. Occasional reports of nausea 7. Failure of electronic equipment, like tape recorders and cameras 8. Rapid battery drain Plant samples taken from formations have exhibited abnormal swelling of the nodes on the stalks, abnormal cell wall pit enhancement, polyembryony, carbonization and other characteristics. Sometimes soil is found to contain short lived isotopes that are produced by heavy hydrogen nuclei bombardment. It is possible that these isotopes may have been generated at the time the circle was formed by whatever energy source did the creation. Seed samples taken from inside circles germinate far faster than do control sample seeds. That is the opposite of what one would expect since the grain stems within the circles are bent at 90 degree angles. Also, many times the next crop in the field where there has been a formation has a design of discolored plants matching the pattern of the formation the season before. Certainly, a great deal more evidence and research is needed to crack the mystery of crop circles, but until that mystery is solved we are off to England during the "season" to appreciate the works of these unknown great artists!

" Yep. There is evidence that some American churches funded part of this campaign by hiring and sending hoaxers to England. So said one of the key researchers in 1992. Seems that the churches have much to lose if these circles are created by intelligences other than what they can ascribe to their teachings. One wonders if they simple-mindedly believe they are the work of the 'devil?'

Uhmm.. don't think so somehow - almost all the circles were produced by genuine Brits. Call them "hoaxers" if you like - the people who made them have never made any particular claims - they just make them and stand back to see what people imagine when they see them! (Just to put this in perspective, I pointed out that they were probably man-made in a radio broadcast way back in 1986, it didn't depend on Doug and Dave's claims to "discredit" them.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Philip Taylor, Royal Greenwich Observatory, Madingley Road, CAMBRIDGE.
