S E D S Students for the Exploration & Development of Space Societe des etudiants/tes pour l'Exploration et le Developpement Spatial 3rd General Meeting Wed, Oct 28, 5:30pm Room 315, Petrie Science Building Guest Speaker: Dr. Charlene Heisler Equality in the Sciences, Is It Becoming a Reality? Two decades ago, US women earned about 4% of the nation's physics Ph.Ds. Today, they earn about 5%. The low representation of women in physics persists even though it has been discussed in various forums in recent years. Why are the percentages of women in other sciences (even engineering) showing dramatic increases, while in astronomy and physics they are not? I recently attended a conference entitled: ``A Meeting on the Status of Women in Astronomy''. I will briefly summarize some of the interesting findings presented at this conference, including the statistics (some of which are very surprising), problems and proposed solutions. **NOTE: All York University residence students!! You can watch live coverage of York Alumni Steve MacLean's first shuttle flight. Starting Thursday, Oct 21st you can tune into live coverage of the launch, flight, and landing, on channel 34 of the York Cable System. ** All are invited to join us at our general meetings. Food and refreshments are served free for members. Membership is $5.00 per year. Hope to see you there!
