CPU unstable after memory upgrade

Hi all,

I've just installed an extra 32Mb SDRAM to my Cyrix 686 based machine to
give a total of 64Mb. The CPU is a 686MX P200 running at 2x75MHz. It was
running fine at this setting before the memory upgrade but now is very
unstable (system lock-ups) at that speed. Using the P166 setting of 66x2
everything is solid as a rock.
8 months ago, when first setting up this CPU, motherboard and first
stick of 32 Mb SDRAM I had similar problems. I ran it at the P166
setting for a couple of weeks, re-set to P200 setting and it worked
fine. Do these things take time to run in? I had thought it might have
something to do with the video card (S3 Virge2D/3D 4Mb) as the lock ups
frequently occur when doing something graphicaly intesive (games or all
the time with the OpenGL screensavers) but also during a windows session
(moving the mouse?). I'm only asking out of curiosity as I'm really
happy with the system now. Even runs those groovy OpenGL screen savers!
Any ideas?
Cheers

Possibly the new memory is not up to scratch. You could check to see what
speed the PCI bus is running at when the system clock is set at 75 MHz.
Many boards give you the option to choose between System Clock divided by
two (ie. 37.5MHz when System Clock is at 75 MHz) or a fixed setting of 33
MHz. If this is the case with your board, try setting the PCI clock to 33
MHz and the system clock to 75MHz and see if that helps.

This CPU comes in two versions, 2.5x66MHz and 2.0x75MHz. Check the CPU to
see which one you have and set the correct speeds. My experience is that the
66MHz CPU doesn't like the 75MHz setting, giving lockups etc.

Hi,
I would have to ask who installed the memory chip and was it done with
antistatic protection. If not maybe your memory chip or a part insode is
statically damamged.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.
My parts supplier suggested it must be incompitability between the old and
the new DIMMs. He's offered to swap the old for new under warranty.
Good onya Bozzo.
