A Visiting Assistant Professor Position (1992-93) is available at Southern
Methodist University. The teaching load would be two courses in fall, one
in spring.
SMU is a private university with about 5000 undergraduates located on a
gracious campus about ten minutes from downtown Dallas and about twenty five
minutes from current SSC headquarters. The physics department is a small one
specializing in particle physics. Its experimental group is part of CLEO at
CESR and GEM at SSC; its theorists' interests range from light cone physics
to structure functions to higgs physics to astrophysics. It enjoys close
relations with SSC.
Interested candidates should contact Vigdor L. Teplitz, Chair, Physics.
Arranging for three letters of recommendation would be helpful.

The Institute of Manufacturing Technology invites applications for
researchers to join the institute at both senior and junior appointments
in the following research areas:
Laser Process or Waterjet/Abrasive Waterjet Technology: To develop and
implement advanced manufacturing technology, performing industry-related
applied R&D projects, and liasing with industrial partners.
Laser Process Technology:
Planned research activities are: 1) Laser trimming trimming on Resonator
2) Laser welding 3)Laser inspection and 4) laser cutting.
Waterjet/Abrasive Waterjet Technology:
Planned research activities are: 1) System integration 2) Automatic food
process system with waterjet, 3) Expert system development 4) Cutting
mechanism study and 5) Nozzle and high pressure accessories development.
IMT is a National Institute established in June 1990 and committed to the
promotion of advanced manufacturing technologies in Singapore. The Institute
was established under the National Automation Master Plan, Singapore and set
up under the umbrella of Nanyang Technological University.
Qualifications :
Research Engineer Candidates should have a good Honours degree in Mechanical/
Production Engineering.
Development Engineer Candidates should have Master's degree in Mechanical/
Production Engineering or related fields. Relevant industrial experience
preferred.
Research Fellow: A doctoral degree in related sciences. Relevant industrial
experience is preferred.
Renumeration: Gross monthly salary ranges as follows:
Research Engineer : S$1967 - $5086
Development Engineer : S$2531 - $5218
Research Fellow : S$2819 - $5350
(U.S. $1 = S$1.62 as at July 1992)
The point of entry to the salary range above will commensurate with
candidate's qualification and experience.
Staff of the institute are provided with annual leave, central provident fund
contributions (CPF) and medical benefits. CPF is a compulsory contribution
on the staff's part (22 % Gross Monthly Salary of staff and 18 % on
employers' part as at July 1992), similar to retirement fund but has more
dynamic rulings, and is non-taxable. The CPF can be used for the Singapore's
medisave scheme and housing payment scheme, and other schemes. The Institute
adopts the Government's practice of payment of an annual variable component
(AVC), the quantum of which is dependent on Government guidelines. In past
years, the quantum of such bonuses has not been less than one month's gross
salary. In 1991, the AVC was 2 3/4 month's gross salary.
Research Engineers will be encouraged to register as postgraduate research
students of the Nanyang Technological University, to pursue higher degrees
(MEng or PhD as appropriate). The researchers will base their graduating
theses on the projects they had worked on.
Interested candidates please send your resume to: MTHYOW@NTUVAX (in
Postscript or Text or ASCII format) or fax to (65) 791-2927 (c/o Miss Yow
Ting Hwee, Administrative Assistant, IMT). If you need more information,
please write to the above e-mail address. We would be pleased to help
you, and look forward to hearing from you.
