A firend of mine did claynation for a school project.  I believe what he found the best was DAS modelling clay.  He found that you could do a number of things with it and that it didn't dry or crack.  Also the detailing he could out in it was fabulous.  When he finished his movie he could then throw the work in the oven and make it hard and put it on a base and put it on a shelf in his workshop.
