REGIONAL COLLABORATION IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION An ICMI Regional Conference to be held at MONASH UNIVERSITY, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, APRIL 19-23, 1995 The first ICMI (International Commission on Mathematics Instruction) Regional Conference to be held in Australia will bring together people from three rather different communities: Mathematics and Mathematics Education, governmental and non-governmental organisations, and the computing and telecommunications industry. It will also experiment with the use of telecommunications in linking several off-shore conference sites with the main site at Monash. The main aim of the conference is to address the issues, problems and mechanisms concerning regional collaboration. The academic content of the conference will be organised around three broad themes; mathematics and the environment, teachers and the system, learners and society, and papers are invited which address these themes in the context of regional development. As well as the usual academic conference activities, several specific events are planned including a regional mathematics pre-conference competition, a forum on governmental strategies on regional educational policies, and six mathematics master classes. Key note speakers and master class speakers include: Professor Benvenido Nebres (Phillippines), Professor Cheryl Praeger (Australia), Professor Ken Clements (Australia), Professor Jeremy Kilpatrick (U.S.A.), Professor Christine Keitel (Germany), Professor Collette Laborde (France). The conference chair is Professor Alan J. Bishop, Faculty of Education, Monash University, and further information can be obtained from The Conference Secretariat 144 Jolimont Road EAST MELBOURNE VIC 3002 AUSTRALIA telephone +61 3 654 7533 fax +61 3 654 8540
