MATHEMANIA RELEASED Mathemania can be found on Simtel.Net in /pub/simtelnet/win95/math It is called MTH.ZIP and should be unzipped using pkzip with the -d option. Mathemania is a Windows Application Program written specifically for students in the field of Mathematics. High school to university level students, and even professionals would benefit from its use. Mathemania pioneers a revolutionary new way in solving mathematical problems analytically. Being a virtual mathematics work surface, it allows you to solve problems with the 'ease and spontaneity' of intuitive Windows drag and drop manipulations. Your solutions are precise and error free. It is in the spirit of Mathemania to assist the you in only individual steps of a problem and to prevent you from making mistakes. It is however still up to the you to solve the problem. For this reason Mathematics Departments may encourage its use. Mathemania acts as a slave which handles the intricacies and trivialities of algebra. This allows the user to focus more on the problem at hand and thereby encourages lateral thinking. It is much faster and easier to use Mathemania to solve a problem rather than using pen and paper. You only type in the original expression once, all derived expressions are obtained by ergonomically interfaced mouse manipulations. If you come to a dead end in your working you can restart from any point in your calculation in a matter of two mouse clicks. The entering of expressions is easier and faster than ever before due to automatic typing correction, undo and redo capabilities, ambiguity prevention, as well as context sensitive keystroke translation. All mathematical objects are displayed in the fashionable WYSIWYG style which is far superior to a confusing command line equivalent. You also do not need to scan tediously through menus in order to find an integral or limit object for example, just type i n t (or ctrl I), or l i m. Interactive tutorials teaches the user how to use the program. The tutorials tackle sample problems in a step by step manner, instructing the user exactly what to do. Although the tutorials accompanying the program are designed to tutor the use of the program specifically, Mathemania tutorials could serve as an educational tool for academic institutions to teach scholars in mathematics. Some special features: Integration: by parts using tables by substitution by partial fractions, competing square, factoring, long division Derivatives: Normal and Partial derivatives (multiple order) Done at once or in steps Matrices: Augmented matrix manipulation Determinant manipulation Graphing: Implicit two dimensional relation Piece wise defined functions 'Animated' families of curves (only allowed for parametric graphs and functions) Mathematics is an extremely vast field. Needless to say, there are still aspects which are not exhausted by this version of Mathemania. Here are some areas that are not covered sufficiently by the current version: Complex analysis (except for basics) Differential equations Set theory Hyperbolic trigonometric functions Integration by changing coordinate system (for multiple integrals) This is not a big constraint, since all that is required to solve related problems (as well as Fourier Analysis and Laplace Transforms) is a little more organization on the user's part. Alternatively Mathemania could be used as a tool in solving parts of a problem. Minimum System Requirements Mathemania is compiled to run on 286 with 1MB of RAM, although you would find that you could not use the program effectively on such a machine. A colour monitor (pref. at 800 by 600 or higher resolution) and mouse is strongly recommended. Mathemania is guaranteed to fail (appear buggy) on Windows 3.1 or Windows NT machines, even though Mathemania is a Windows 3.1 application. CPU: 486 Memory: 4MB, pref. more OS: Microsoft Windows 95 Misc.: Mouse, Colour monitor Disk Space: 1.3MB Note This is the first version of Mathemania. Although Mathemania has been thoroughly tested, we cannot guarantee its reliability. Corne van Dyk dvandyk@engmlab.uct.ac.za
