Hello Stephanie, you said in part......

SM> I do not smoke but both of my parents do. They know the harmful
SM> effects of smoking but still they continue to "light up."

I too knew of the harm I was doing, to myself and others, by my
smoking habit. That didn't stop me. It wasn't that I didn't want
     to, I couldn't.

SM> Also what types of things could I remind my parents of that might
SM> help them to change their minds about smoking for their sake if not
SM> mine???

     After smoking for almost 50 years, I became a non-smoker July 22,
1992. <Yea! G> Still am...Tell them that no matter how hard and how
many times they have tried to quit smoking, never give up. Try over
and over, try different ways and keep trying. They know the harm
they are doing, it's just that right now they are unable to quit.
So encourge them to keep trying.

I did not think the gum was effective and I could not afford the
patches, so I went to a Smoking Cessation Class at the VA Clinic.
Quit cold turkey. Now teaching and trying to help others quit.

Peace..........................Ed
