Jim Dixon is responding to Tyler Coffey's bytes to All
about logging
TC> regarding logging. The reason I'm writing this is because
TC> a common general statement I've been seeing saying that at
TC> the current rate of logging there will be no old growth
TC> forests to enjoy or no oxygen left on our planet in a
TC> matter of a few decades. Now this really pisses me off.
You just added to the alreaady poor image of pro-logging by using language
that is not needed. If you yourself would look at the 'opponents' data,
and give it a thorough reading, you might take a different view.
TC> If everybody who writes this kind of garbage would get off
TC> thier can to read some factual information about this
You see Tyler, you again sound a hypocrite. You condem without first
chomping back some of the data. Ok, so you support clear-cutting, logging
away like there is no tommorrow...but what if you are wrong and the
opponents are right? How will _you_ fix the mistake?
TC> in our forestry supply. By that time second growth
TC> forests will be mature and ready for harvest. If people
TC> wouldn't believe every damn thing they here from the
TC> Sierra Club and other such organizations they would
If people believed everything you want them to believe, where would the
forest industry be? People _do_ read "factual information" and that is why
there is a major concern over how irresponsible forestry has been. For
decades, forestry was self-policing. Now, technology has measured forestry
responsibility and found it needed a darned good spanking and sent to the
corner. Most people are not against loggin (there are tho, extremists
everywhere.) What cocnerns most is the hap-hazard cut-and run attitude. We
know clear-cutting destroys the local ecology. We know that in the past
forestry did nothing but pack-up and move leaving destroyed degradated
areas behind. The move against the forest industry is to make certain they
become responsible stewards of their own industry. History shows us that
they cannot police themselves properly. In short, we allowed the fox to
tend the chickens and realize that this was a mistake.
TC> realize how stupid they really are. It is clubs like this
TC> that have put logging into the recession it is in right
Stupid is ignoring the problems. Stupid is letting the fox tend the
chicks. Stupid is letting the logging pulp/paper do what they want. Yes,
we were stupid...for letting them get away with so much over the years.
Whats most enviro-groups want is to ensure that there will be enough trees
in future, that the ecology is restored and not eliminated. It is most
beneficial not just to those who are not profiting from logging, but to the
forest industry itself.
TC> now. Many are out of the job, and many more soon will be.
Most forest companies like to blame their woes on enviro groups. It's an
easy cop-out and while they point a finger, they are packing their bags and
moving to areas where there are trees left worth logging. Had forestry be
more responsible, looked to the future, they wouldn't have enviros on
their backs. The data speaks for itself. Gov't wouldn't kill jobs if the
data supporting the move wasn't there. The market plays a key role as
well. If the demand for the product isn't there, why cut? If it can't be
sold, they can't make the payroll. Blameing enviros is a cowards way out.
You only have to look at how much land has been wasted, ecology destroyed,
fish habitats ruined, spawning grounds eliminated to realize just how
irresponsible forestry has been.
TC> I'm not totally against saving the environment, but this
TC> is not the way to do it. Time, money, and effort need to
TC> be put into buying less plastic, and stopping the logging
TC> that is hurting the environment. That being the logging
And what, buy and use more wood? That is akin to a second form of welfare.
Buy and use to support loggers? Not this cowboy. I buy and use what I
need, not to support someone else who abused their postion in the first
place.
TC> of South America's tropical rain forests. People who
TC> think logging in the northwest is killing of the spotted
TC> owl need to come here and see the real story. I've lived
What YOU call the "real" story is data or ideas planted by??? The forest
industry? Hmmmm?
TC> here all my life and the only time I've ever seen one of
TC> them birds is in a clear cut. That is where they prefer
"one" bird...what does that tell you.
... There are 3 sides to every story, Their side, Your side, and the Truth
