I received a lot of satisfaction teaching Jr & Sr Hi students elementary
structural truss analysis so they could better compete in the Colorado
State Wide Science Olympiad. (Bridge building was one of several events in
this contest).
Brian, my most devoted student, won the state competition several times
under my guidence. I explained the geometry and physics necessary to sum
the forces around each joint in the truss. Then he data entered a pascal
program from "Numerical Recipies in Pascal" to solve the 10 equations and
10 unknowns (with my help).
This competition really gets students excited about math and physics and
shows them some real-world applications of the geometry and matrix algebra
they (may) learn in math class.
I would like to volunteer my services again to the local Jr. & Sr. High
schools (or anyone else), but I am having trouble finding information
about the bridge building contests.
I briefly contemplated writing a magazine article on the subject a while
ago, but that is not as satisfying as working with students directly. I
suppose I could still be inspired to do so.
Can anyone guide me to finding out about bridge building contests or other
ways I can contribute to the educational community?
Thanks,
Sieg
