I'm aware that this is a moderated list and that it's
generally used for discussion. Soozi (and others), I
hope it's appropriate to post the following....

The Chatback Trust announces four projects for schools
in the UK and abroad. We particularly welcome schools
or units for children with special needs.

Projects will run from January 1993 to April 1993. The
following text is just a summary, for further
information on these please write to the moderators or
to the Director of Chatback, Tom Holloway (CAMPUS
 01:CLK001 or Internet t.holloway@warwick.ac.uk).

This project is a wonderful way to draw in the senior
members of every child's family. You might also ask
grandmothers and grandfathers to come to your class to
recall their school days and to share their adventures with
 your pupils.

 ACTIVITIES
ONE Write up notes on an interview with a senior citizen
on a word processor and send them to REMEMBER.
TWO Find words which come from before 1950 and explain
their meaning, or find words from those times which
       are no longer used.
THREE Tell us about the books you have read which describe
       life in those years.
FOUR Write to Pat Davidson with questions about life as a
school-child during the years of World War Two.

This cross-curriculum project will encourage exchanges with

our festivals. It will look at stories of the time of the
Viking settlers, and also at the problems being experienced
NOW by settlers from other countries.

 ACTIVITIES
ONE Contacts with schools abroad about common words in
       our language and theirs.
TWO Making models of Viking ships.
THREE Finding out where some of our festivals come from.
FOUR Exchanging information about books you have read.

The Ten identical steel yachts which left Southampton on
26th September 1992 in a race around the world are now
around Cape Horn and on their way to Hobart, Tasmania.
On February 13th they leave Hobart for the third stage
which ends in Capetown. You will be able to write to
crew members on these boats and receive responses to your
questions. (Only nine left! British Steel II was completely
dismasted in a storm on 18th December, 2,000 miles from
 the nearest port).

 ACTIVITIES
ONE Geography/mapping. Plot the course of a yacht.
 TWO Exchanges with crew members.
 THREE Imaginative writing. Write a 100-word MINI-SAGA.

TWO Report on wildlife, seen and unseen.
THREE Report on pollution, water sampling.
FOUR Resources. Where water comes from, and goes to.
FIVE Imaginative writing. A short story.
