JC> your girls interested in having pen pals with my girls. JC> It would be great for our children to communicate with JC> each other from different parts of the country. What do JC> you think? My oldest daughter has penpals both electronically and the traditional way, and enjoys it a lot. My little one's just starting to write, and has expressed a desire to get some penpals when she's able. JC> Who writes the portfolio review , you or the certified teacher ? The portfolio is simply a collection of the child's work for the teacher to review; this and an interview with the child should be enough for the teacher to write an assessment (in lieu of standard testing). JC> The school offcials don't have to see the evaluations JC> at the end of every school year? Who determines a JC> "deficiency"? Who then knows about the deficiency and JC> how do you reassure the officials the problem is resolved? The only thing the officials are legally entitled to see each year is the "intent to homeschool" form, stating that the child is being homeschooled. I've never had to deal with this type of problem, but I believe that whatever certified (by the state) teacher does the assessment would identify any deficiency and arrange for a follow up evaluation of some kind. Unless or until the deficiency is called to the state's attention (I honestly don't know if certified teachers are required to report this to the s tate or not), it would be between the cert. teacher and the homeschooled family. The Washington Homeschool Organization probably has more specific info on dealings with the state in these areas- let me know if you want their address.
