Hi, Amber. I got your message. What books and authors have you read? Who is your favourite author? Some of my favourite authors are : Isaac Asimov, Andre Norton, C.S.Lewis, Tolkein, Lloyd Alexander, Sylvia Louise Engdahl, Madeleine L'Engle, Jay Williams ( ie the Danny Dunn books as well as others). Have you read any books by these authors? I first read some of them when I was about your age. I am now 24. I still reread some of the books by these authors even today ( I recently read the Magic Grandfather by Jay Williams). You said AL> No, I'm not familiar with chess notation, but I'd like to play long AL> distance chess. I'm glad. I really like playing chess, though I am no grand master. If you find chess notation difficult, perhaps we could simply describe each move in words. So for example, if I were opening the game, I would say I move the pawn in front of my ( the white) queen two squares forward ( this is what P - Q4 means) What colour would you like to play, Black or White? You also said AL> The SimCity idea sounds fun! I think I'll look into it. Yeah, I thought the idea was intriguing. I haven't yet heard from the teacher I sent the idea to originally. However, a lot of other people have read my message to your Mum and to this teacher about the project and thought that the idea was good. In fact, apparentally, a similar project using SimCity is already under way in the state of Arkansas. If you would like we could do a simple version of this project together. For starters, why don't you describe your home town to me in SimCity terms. I could then describe Auckland, New Zealand to you in SimCity terms. Also, Have you heard of two simulation games similar to SimCity called Railroad Tycoon and Civilisation? I think you would like these games. Railroad Tycoon is very like SimCity except that you are building a railroad line or company up instead of a city. Moreover, if you like reading about history particularly ancient history then I think you would like Civilisation. In this game you have to guide the growth of a peoples or civilisation over a period of 4000 years from mudhuts in the stone age to the era of space flight. It is an incredible game, some what like chess inh its complexity yet more 'interesting' if you know what I mean. Finally, your mum said that you were interested in myths and legends. Have you read any of the Greek or Norse legends? I adored these myths when I was young, and in fact I still do. Have you tried writing your own myths, creating your own world, and/ or making up your own language? This can be great fun.
