RE: REMINDER: THE NEW EXPLORERS VIDEOCONFERENCE
REMINDER: THE NEW EXPLORERS Videoconference will be broadcast on March 25,
1993, 4-5 PM Eastern on most PBS stations. This *free* national
videoconference is designed to heighten awareness of the primetime PBS
series, THE NEW EXPLORERS and its educational resources among educators, and
to showcase the NEW EXPLORERS educational model and how it can be adapted in
schools and communities nationwide to both improve science education and
strengthen students' interest in science as a career.
In early February WTTW will send a Videoconference Planning Packet to
all registered sites. Please contact your local PBS station Education
Services Director to see if this videoconference will be available in your
area. To find out the name and phone number of your Education Services
Director, feel free to call Tom Flavell at PBS at 703/739-5402 or E-mail him
at TFLAVELL@PBS.ORG .
The packet will include updated information on the videoconference, tips
for organizing the videoconference at your site, suggested invitation
list, sample invitation, sample local press release, logo sheet with
camera-ready NEW EXPLORERS logos, a contact list, the latest NEW
EXPLORERS newsletter, and a description of the videoconference handouts
WTTW will send your station prior to March 25. The packet is designed
to make it as easy as possible for your station to host this
videoconference.
Because this videoconference is designed to stimulate action rather than
merely provide information, we encourage your station to consider hosting
this event live. The videoconference will show participants -- teachers,
museum/science center personnel, and other educators -- how to adopt THE
NEW EXPLORERS educational model in your community. By convening
participants, your station can provide the opportunity for them to
discuss next steps immediately after the videoconference. While the
videoconference will heighten individual educators' awareness of THE NEW
EXPLORERS television series and educational components, its real
strength lies in the potential for true educational reform through
partnerships and its ability to inspire an entire generation of students
to lean about science and consider careers in it. By sponsoring this
videoconference and discussion, your station can make an educational
impact, signal its educational value, and maximize publicity for the
upcoming third season of THE NEW EXPLORERS. Stations participating in
the Public Television Outreach Alliance's year-long project "Take Action
for Education" will also want to take advantage of this opportunity.
PLEASE LET YOUR STATION EDUCATION SERVICES DIRECTOR KNOW YOU ARE INTERESTED!
