mixtures of substances
.
.
. The color black in some inks
. and dyes is made up of
. several component colors
. which can be separated

OBJECTIVES:
.
. Students will be able to separate the colors in an ink
. sample by using chromatography
. Students will be able to make a chromatogram
. Students will analyze and match bands of color
. Students will be able to analyze data
.
INTRODUCTION:
. Chromatography is a method which allows scientists to separate mixtures of
substances. If the parts of a mixture are colored, as in inks or dyes, they
show up as bands of color when separated. (Chromatography comes from the Greek
word that means "color writing".)
.
Some inks and dyes are made up of many different molecules of color
particles. The particles are dissolved in a liquid base such as water or
alcohol. When the ink is used, the liquid base dries, leaving the color
particles behind. When the dried ink is put in water the different
color molecules separate into colored bnads. In paper chromatography, thick
filter paper is used as the medium on which the colors, when wet, separate and
dry.
.
THE MYSTERY
.
. Students and teachers arrived at school this week to find that vandals had
struck. Someone had drawn a moustache on a valuable poster of the Mona Lisa.
The community was shocked! Who could have committed such a dastardly deed?
.
Officer Anastasia, of the Police Department apprehended 3 suspects. Each was
found to be hiding a pen which could have been used to vandalize the poster.
Each claims to be innocent.
.
The only way to solve the crime is through the use of chromatography. First,
detectives will analyze the inks from the pens carried by the suspects.
. Next, the ink on the poster will be analyzed. When the results are compared
we should be able to determine which suspect committed the crime.
