BBSCI #2 part 3 mysterious moustache This one does not require a lot of equipment. The hardest part is making a copy of a picture of the MONA LISA. If that is not available the name could be changed to a picture of someone that you can easily find. The markers require some testing so that you are using three different water based markers (permanent ones should NOT be used). Try different black markers. Put a dot of the marker on a strip of chromatography paper( strips of coffee filters about 1/2" to 3/4" wide are fine). You should put each dot about an inch up from the bottom of the paper. Then Follow kids directions to separate colors. Some have more blues, some more yellows, some more purples etc. Pick the three that you are going to use. Cut three strips for each child that is going to do the experiment and label strips A, B ,and C with PENCIL (this will not separate when the water hits it) On each of Strip A put the dot of the first black marker, on each strip of B put the dot of the second marker and on Strip C with the third marker. This is the most time consuming step, but I did it at the end of lunch for 140 kids so I know it is not too bad. The cut a rectangle in the mouth area of the Mona Lisa (or other picture) and back it with a strip of filter paper like the ones the kids are using. Then draw your BEST MOUSTACHE with One of the markers. (LABEL all of the three markers A, B, and C.) After the kids bring in their homework , you can separate the colors of the moustache and compare it to the markers of the three criminals. (you can give them names if you want) The Strip with the marker that matches the moustache will surely reveal the criminal. The only real trick is to choose three markers in the beginning that have distinctive colors when they separate. This can lead to discussions of police work, the work of scientists who observe and match samples etc. The kids have a great time with this one and there is a bit of suspense left until the next day when the 'Criminal' is revealed. As always, your comments and results are welcome. Have Fun! -- uucp: uunet!m2xenix!puddle!321!110!Helen.Sternheim Internet: Helen.Sternheim@f110.n321.z1.fidonet.org
