Brown Bag Science #13 Name_________________________
.
The Science of Sound--Creating a Music Machine
.
Materials in Bag: 2 meters of string
Materials from Home: forks, spoons, knives, ruler
.
Information: the air is filled with tiny molecules. When an object vibrates
(moves back and forth) it causes the molecules
to move. The molecules closest to the vibrations push against
the molecules next to themselves, and so on. The molecules travel
through the air and come in contact with our eardrums, vibrating
them so that we hear sound. We say that the molecules move through the air in
waves, called sound waves.
.
.
1. Hold the ruler tight on top of a table so that about 3/4 of
. the ruler hangs off of the table. Twang the free end so that . . the ruler
vibrates up and down.
.
2. What do you observe?__________________________________________

3. What do you think is happening to the molecules around the
. ruler?________________________________________________________

4. Tap a fork or a spoon against a hard surface, such as the
. floor. (BE CAREFUL SO THAT YOU DON'T MARK UP A GOOD SURFACE)

5. Tie the string around the fork so that the fork is in the
. middle of the string. Hold the ends of the string so that the
. fork swings free. Have a friend hit the fork with a spoon.
