I volunteered to be a "porter" for the Bangkok Project because
I think it will give us (in K12Net) an opportunity for broader
exposure to the global issues involved in Distance Education,
as well as an opportunity to showcase K12Net as the truly
global network it is rapidly becoming.

While I was in Japan attending and presenting at iNET'92 in
June, I learned that there are a significant number of
southern hemisphere and developing countries which can
only access Internet via FidoNet and uucp connections, and
met many people who were eager to share in K12Net. Those
conversations have continued all summer, and I expect to
see K12Net expand in Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe,
and Africa this fall.

During the month of September, general pre-conference
announcements will be posted in both Channels 8 and 9.
In early October, Channel 8 will be devoted to Dr.
Robin Mason's discussion of "Applications of Electronic
Communication for Distance Education in the Third World",
while Channel 9 will feature the discussions regarding
emerging theories (Dr. Michael Moore) and strategic
planning (Dr. Tony Bates).

The late October/early November panels on research
(Dr. Gene Rubin) and databases (Mr. Laury Melton)
will also be carried in Channel 9 unless the level
of participation and enthusiasm of the participants
in the earlier discussions mandates a split between
the two channels. Finally, Dr. David Sewart's post-
conference discussion on student support will also
be carried in Channel 9.

Nancy Petersen (105/23.11) and I will be co-moderating
the two channels for the duration of the project. We
are both receiving the mailing list icdecc-m directly
from Terry Anderson at the University of Calgary, and
will transpost messages in the discussions as rapidly as
possible.

I'm excited about this opportunity to share with our
colleagues world-wide, and hope you will look forward
to reading their messages as well as sharing your
perspective on the subjects related to distance
education. As a final note, I would expect these two
channels to be limited to teachers/administrators/
professional educators; please discourage student
participation. Imagine yourself at an international
conference - it's a virtual reality!!
