model (one student, one school classroom, no acculturation)

placements.

Just some additional information about the new practicum model
I noted earlier, and a comment. To wit: Canada is supposedly
a developed country and telephone communications are pretty iffy.
We've had lots of trouble with the RITE system this year, for
example. In fact, given the variety and age of exisitng bridges,
phone sets, convenors, etc., it's amazing we don't have major
trouble on every teleconference! I think another problem is that
telephone technology is so ubiquitous that users don't realize
that there are learned skills in its (competent) use.

Anyway, we are ready now to implement phase I of the VISIT project.
We will be supplying 5 students on a practicum placement with
Powerbooks that have been loaded with Word, Excel, and Mactie.
They'll each have an individual ID for Profs and hopefully the
library system. A number of structured workshops, in-school,
will be provided (for example, how to make transparencies using
Word) and structured activities will require them to e-mail each
other and their faculty consultant, join conferences, etc. This
may or may not lead to the following VISIT trial at the same school,
where we will compare conferencing with video to conferencing
without, as one example. One way we can bypass all the telephone
stuff is by setting up each Powerbook (they all have installed
modems) so that students can dial in simply by clicking on an
icon.....
