From Lani Gunawardena Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1992 00:17:41 CDT Bangkok CMC Conference Discussion topic: Strategic Planning in Distance Education Discussant: Tony Bates, Open Learning Agency, Canada. Host: Lani Gunawardena, University of New Mexico, U.S.A. Terry Anderson posted an abstract of the discussion topic last week. The discussion of strategic planning in distance education will focus on two areas: 1. The process of strategic planning for Distance Education (DE), and 2. The issues being faced by planners, such as: lack of recognition/funding by govts./stakeholders of purpose role of DE technology investment/development/innovation for DE institutions role of DE organizations viz-a-viz conventional institutions union/labour relations issues, especially with tutors visions for DE/open learning. For the first area, "process, " participants are encouraged to discuss different aspects of the process, such as developing environmental scans, issues management, SWOT analyses, (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) etc. You are encouraged to discuss models you have in place in your own institution and share the strengths and weaknesses of these models. For the second area, "issues," it is important to focus on strategies for addressing the issues rather than spending too much time on discussing the issues themselves. Do you have the same strategic issues, or different ones? What are some strategies you have developed for addressing these issues? We look forward to the opportunity to share ideas globally and learn from your experiences. In order to make this discussion easy to follow, we would like to encourage you to use the subject line when responding. Please state "Planning" in the subject li> ne to identify the topic. Tony will further clarify the topic and address your reactions. I will summarize the responses at the end of every week and will try to weave the ideas together at the conclusion of this discussion. We hope you will enjoy this discussion and look forward to your participation. Lani Gunawardena University of New Mexico, U.S. A.
