It is the 10th of December and still snowing. They are calling this storm Beth and seem to have come up with the idea that many good ole N'or Easters are actually hurricane that deliver snow. We have already had 3 snow days and are only into about our 63rd day of school. Stateside we go do school for 185 days. I suspect our summer vacation to be cut sho9rt radically.
This is Ashfield, MA reporting. We are located 42o30' N 72o46'W. Temperature has been hovering around freezing for the past week and the local streams at my school that my students are monitoring are partially frozen over.
Hunting season closed Friday and the number of deer taken wasup greatly from previous years. Eastern coyote is making a comeback, some mistake him for a "coy-dog" . Many still want to kill off these natural preditors as is supposed to be happening in ALASKA in January when they are going to have a big shoot out as they feel the wolves have weakend the caribou herds.
Forgot to pull our one of my rosemary plants from the garden so unfortunately it is doomed. The rest I have put under a grow light at school where each year it has seemed to flourish. The rhododendron are one ofl the few leafed plants that give a nice green to the abeauty of the white surroundings. When we are do for a weather change you can often look at their leaves. They curl up when the weather is due to drop.
We have been diligent about keeping the feeders filled and are being visited by a family of cardinals, juncos, sparrows, chickadees, nuthatches, and an occassional downy woodpecker. The crows hang out in our horse pasture and the jays warn all of anything approaching. Haven't seen much of the morning doves since the snow started. I never saw them as a child so I wonder what their history is to this area.
Wednesday we had a full moon and there was a wonderful total eclipse of the moon. I lhad parent-teacher conference that night but brought the parents who came at 20 minute intervals to witness with me the varied stages which the moon took. Mt. Pinatuba's ash did not create the reddish cast which scientists had anticipated.
Well better get off so I can keep the wood stove burning.
