Study area: suburban Spokane (Moran Prairie)47Õ 39Ó N. , 117Õ25Ó W. 1,900 alt. Weather: The weather is the big news here. We have had 60Ó of snow thus far this winter, (more than usual and heading for a record).A stationary cold front has been over eastern Washington for two weeks with warm moist air rolling in from the Pacific. The storms have alternated coming from the SW and then back from the NE. The winter school vacation has been extended into this week due to poor travel conditions. The snow is accompanied by wind causing blowing and drifting snow. The temperatures have been in 20Õs F. but will be dropping later this week, wind chills are below 0F. Plants: All plants are in hibernation. Bushes are completely buried in snow drifts and the tree trunks are deep in snow to their branches. Birds: The birds are very busy at the feeder all day long. I have found that they are going through 3 lbs of bird food each day. I have to put on snowshoes to get to the bird feeder. The first to arrive each morning are the Chickadees, next come several varieties of Sparrows. When several pairs of house finches arrive the other birds leave to the pine trees nearby. The other regular visitors are Juncos. The birds are partial to sunflower seeds which I have had to ration with plain wild bird seed until I can get out to the store again. Animals: There are no animal tracks visible in our yard. There are reports of moose and deer in town, however, due to heavy snows in nearby forests and mountains. Residents are advised to stay clear and not to feed them.
