Lorna, thank you, and thanks to your class for all the work you have put into studying this country. I am most impressed! You have asked a lot of questions - here are my answers: LK>How near to the seashore do you live? About half a mile. It's a short walk to Cheltenham Beach, which is about a mile long. At one end there are rocks, and at the other end is North Head, a dormant volcano. Directly out from the beach is Rangitoto Island, a landmark of Auckland, another volcano with a crater at the top. LK>How often do you go to a beach? My family joined with 8 other local families yesterday. We went for a beach walk from Takapuna Beach around some rocks to Milford Beach. In summer we go to the beach about 3 times a week. LK>Do you eat a lot of fish? Until a few years ago, we could walk out on Cheltenham Beach and collect a bucketfull of cockles in just a few minutes. But it got too popular, and there are fewer these days. Fish is a major part of the local diet, together with sheep meat (mutton) and steak (beef). LK>What town do you live in? I live in the suburb of Devonport, in Auckland. LK>How many people live in your town? There are 3.5 million people in New Zealand, over 800,000 in Auckland. LK>What is the temperature there? Typically it is 15 deg C which is 59 F by day at this time of year. LK>We are beginning Fall and the temperature is 50-70 F. during LK>the days. We refer to Fall as Autumn. We are currently in Spring looking forward to Summer, which comes at Christmas time. LK>We started school 5 weeks ago (September - June). LK>What is the school calendar in New Zealand? NZ schools have breaks in May (2 weeks) between 1st and 2nd term, July (1 week) mid term, August/September (2-3 weeks) between 2nd and 3rd term, and then the Christmas break, (6 weeks) from Christmas until the 1st week of February leading up to the 1st term. LK>Audrey commented that you may have a strong sense of place in your LK>country because you can probably know all the parts of it. Audrey is obviously a thinker - what a bright comment! She might be interested to know that we Kiwis also love to travel overseas, probably because we feel isolated from the rest of the world. LK>We hope you will write back. My pleasure. Tell me, does it ever snow in Winter in Spokane? What is the school calendar in your part of the world? LK> * Origin: MACS BBS - Spokane, WA - (509) 924-5364 (HST/DS) (1:346/6) Now here is a coincidence. All the time I have been writing this, there has been a film on TV, based on a true story, set in Spokane. Unfortunately, it's not a very nice story.
